How Does MOT Mileage Verification Work?

How testers record mileage:

Whenever a vehicle is presented at any of the 23,000+ authorised MOT garages across England, Scotland, and Wales, the certified MOT tester must physically read the dashboard odometer and submit the figure directly to the central DVSA computer database before issuing a certificate.

How to spot an odometer discrepancy:

Look at the annual progression of miles. If a vehicle shows 65,000 miles in 2023, but the 2024 test record shows 42,000 miles, the car has either suffered a deliberate rollback ("clocking") or a major cluster replacement error. Never buy a used vehicle with an unexplained mileage decrease without an official manufacturer explanation or garage invoice.
