What Does SORN Mean?

A Statutory Off Road Notification (SORN) informs the DVLA that a vehicle is kept off the public highway (e.g. in a private driveway, garage, or private land).

While a car is SORN, you do not have to pay vehicle excise duty (Road Tax) or maintain car insurance, provided the vehicle never enters or parks on public roads.

⚠️

Driving a SORN Car Penalties

Driving a vehicle declared SORN on a public road is a serious offence in the UK unless you meet the sole legal exception:

  • ✕ Court fines up to £2,500 plus back-taxes owed.
  • ✕ Vehicle wheel-clamping or immediate impoundment.
  • ✓ Sole Exception: You may only drive a SORN vehicle directly to or from a pre-booked MOT test.

Crucial Facts Before Buying a Used Car with SORN

1. SORN Does NOT Transfer Between Owners

When you purchase a used car that the previous keeper declared SORN, the SORN declaration is automatically cancelled by the DVLA upon change of ownership. You must either tax the vehicle immediately online before driving it home or declare SORN in your name.

2. Parking on the Street with SORN is Illegal

Even if a vehicle is stationary and parked outside your home, if any tyre is touching a public council road or highway, it cannot be SORN and will be flagged by DVLA ANPR camera enforcement vans.

3. How to Cancel SORN and Put the Car Back on Road

To un-SORN your car, you simply pay the DVLA road tax online using your V5C logbook reference number. The SORN status expires automatically the moment road tax is registered.
